Choosing Between Plasma, Laser, and Waterjet Cutting
01Plasma cutting: thick material, fast throughput
Plasma is the workhorse for structural-thickness plate — fast, cost-effective, and capable of cutting up to 40 mm mild steel. Tolerance is looser than laser, which is fine for structural brackets and gussets but not for fine architectural detail.
02Laser cutting: precision on thinner material
Laser cutting holds tighter tolerances and a cleaner edge finish, making it the right choice for sheet metal enclosures, architectural perforated panels, and parts that will be visible in the finished product without grinding.
03Waterjet: no heat-affected zone
Waterjet cutting doesn't introduce heat into the material, which matters for heat-sensitive alloys or where a heat-affected zone would compromise material properties. It's slower and typically reserved for specific material or finish requirements.
04Our recommendation approach
We assess material thickness, required tolerance, and finished-surface visibility before recommending a cutting method — for most structural work, plasma is the cost-effective default, with laser reserved for finer components in the same job.
